Tasmanian Homecoming

After spending almost as many years away as I have growing up in Tasmania, coming home is more about the people, my family and my community than the sweeping, achingly beautiful landscape.

Every time I announce that I am heading off to Tassie for a flying visit, without fail, nearly everyone says, “ohh I’d love to visit in Tasmania. I’ve always wanted to go”. My advice is, stop saying it. Just do it. People in Tasmania can’t comprehend the great tyranny of distance between towns on the big Isle, as in Tasmania, you can take an overtaking lane and miss three wonderful little towns full of character and amazing characters.

It’s so easy to fly into Launceston or Hobart, hire a car and trip around our smallest state in 10 days. If you want to take your own car or caravan, hop on the overnight boat from Melbourne to Devonport. Make the most of the different types of accommodation available too. Hotels are great, but the little B&B’s and heritage accommodation houses really make the holiday.  Plan to spend at least three or four days in Hobart, three days exploring Launceston and the Tamar Valley and then the tough choice; do you pick the west coast, east coast or the north west?  Try to fit in Cradle Mountain and the iconic Dove Lake. If you can, the Freycinet Peninsula and do the Wine Glass Bay walk.

In Hobart, take the catamaran up the river to MONA (yes, its worth it), walk to the top and over Mount Wellington (if you’re fit), explore the restaurants and cafes and the heritage buildings in Battery Point and a definite is Salamanca Market. So make Saturday one of your days in Hobart. And if you do decide to visit the North West Coast, drop into the local artist’s gallery in Deloraine and say hi to all the ex-mainlanders now living there! Prepare for a good yak about why they left the big island and take a little piece home of Tasmania home.
