Toni Thompson
What do you most love about working in radio?
Mmm! I think the best thing about the job is having the opportunity to meet fantastic people. At times I've had the opportunity to interview artists from the music industry and politicians. It's always interesting to hear the stories about their lives and what led to their success. I also love the interaction with the listeners; people have so many interesting things to tell you about their lives.
Where did you get you first break in the industry?
Really it was a case of being in the right place at the right time! In fact, my first big break in the industry was at 4SS on the Sunshine Coast. In the late 1980s, after radio school, I decided to call into 4SS and drop off my aircheck to the Program Director. This turned out to be a good thing since they were after someone for the weekend shifts. Luckily for me, they liked what they heard and offered me the gig.
Got a story that stands out about your time in radio/media?
Years ago, I went on the NSW Big Bike ride and did reports along the way. This ride was huge achievement for me since it involved peddling a bike for more than 600 kilometres. I think the worst of it was on the last day because I had stayed up late the night before and found it very difficult to ride the final part of the trek. I believe I was going so slow that a small child passed me on their bike with trainer wheels. That was memorable, but in the end it was worth because it raised money for charity.
Your best feature?
My best feature my enduring ability to perservere and look at life in a realistic way.
Your idea of time out?
I love just having a bit of time to curl up and read a good book. Ever since I finished studying (BA Communication) I think I've read most of Patricia Cornwalls novels. Once you start on one you just have to keep going... Well, that's my excuse!
Star sign?
Aries
If you could pick one thing that describes your personality, what would be?
Patience! No not really I think I could definitely learn to be more patient. Ahh! probably compassion, that's because someone said that to me a few years ago. I'm apparently compasionate and understanding (maybe its because I'm a good listener).
